Living on purpose helps you to live full-out with a powerful sense of who you are and what you are meant to accomplish. Of course you cannot live on purpose if you do not understand your reason for being here on earth. Have you ever wondered: “what is my reason for being here on earth?” Not the superficial reason rather the larger picture of understanding what purpose you were put on earth to serve. So what does it mean to enjoy living on purpose? Too often we have not taken the time to engage in the self-discovery process. I believe it means you have identified your reason for existing, you are serving in that sphere of influence and you are passionately engaged. In other words you enjoy what you are doing without reservation. You are determined to live a life of intentionality focused specifically on your reason for being born. To be intentional presupposes awareness. What is your reason for being here on earth is a question we should all consider. It took me some years to be able to fully comprehend that I’m here for a reason; and so are you. For many understanding that they are here for a reason is difficult to grasp and even more elusive to comprehend. Asking the right question is an important step. I learned that we shouldn’t stop asking the questions during my journey. Einstein discussed the importance of questioning and curiosity. Certainly practicing both in life led to many discoveries that helped to confirm his purpose for living. Today we are still benefiting from his quest.
Living out the knowledge that we are here for a reason is a life-long journey. I was about 4 years old when I started pretending I was leading church services. I lived in a very small town in Mississippi. Outside our front door was a rack that held a tin garbage can. My earliest memories are of me sitting on the steps pretending to play the piano. I would play and sing. Of course, I still can’t sing today. After the song service I would teach from the Bible. I would teach with zeal from the depths of my heart. I made sure my information was accurate and my audience was really getting it. As I got older I would insist that my two brothers sit and listen to me teach. They were a captive audience. During those times I didn’t understand that speaking and teaching were puzzle pieces that explained the fact that I’m here for a reason. My faith is an important part of all that I am and do today!
As I grew up I started looking for ways to satisfy the need I felt to help people. I was passionate about empowering others to live their lives filled with joy and faith. After much debate and prayer I decided to major in social work during my college years. Most of my career choices have involved helping others have a better quality of life. That is the underlying reason for me serving in ministry at my church and starting my business, DLA Empowerment Life Coaching. I am continuing my quest; the journey of living on purpose.
One of the greatest battles you or I will ever face is the battle to walk in the destiny and purpose for which we were placed on this earth. You have a unique purpose that only you can fulfill. As you live on purpose you will begin to experience doors of opportunity that you had not imagined. Your quest will provide a road map to the life you want to live. Living on purpose allows you to dance to your music.
Regardless of what your reason for being here is, you must develop and grow. It is your responsibility to articulate and activate your life calling. As a life coach I work with my clients to help them answer the questions surrounding their reason for being on earth. As a coach it is imperative that my clients understand that the answer to the questions is within them. A great coach is able to help the client access the answer not provide the client with the answer. One of my clients recently discovered that the career they have been pursuing for many years is draining and far from what they really want to do. During the coaching process the client has explored their options and is now envisioning starting her own business.
Living on Purpose Questions
Let’s look at some questions you can ask yourself in order to begin the process of understanding your reason for being on earth. In coaching the answer is secondary to the process. It will help you to begin a process of thinking. We are programmed to expect others to provide the answers for us. Here are a few questions that will help you identify how to live on purpose:
- What activities do you engage in that make you feel completely fulfilled?
- What causes your heart to race with joy?
- If you could do anything now, what would you do?
- When you are totally alone what do you dream about doing?
- Who is your hero?
- What specific traits do you admire in your hero(s)?
- If you only had 30 minutes to live what would you do?
Taking the time to answer the questions is just the beginning.
